It’s that time of the year where we begin to set goals for the coming year, mull over how last year flew by and eat and drink lots of rubbish because, come on, Christmas and New Year parties are just for that! Only a tiny portion of the world sticks by their New Year’s Resolution; most tend to forget about it by the 1st week of January. But fear not! Here are 10 easy but clever ways to make sure you don’t succumb to Devil December and crack your resolutions with a win!
STEP 1: KEEP IT SIMPLE, SILLY
The KISS formula makes life easy! So make sure your resolution is achievable and doable. If we create resolutions that are far beyond our reach, it will be that much easier for you to fail at it!
Example: I will only eat bread 2 times a week or I will do 10,000 steps at least 3 times a week, definitely makes for a simple starting point
STEP 2: AVOID THE WORDS NO, WILL NOT AND CANNOT
Avoid the words NO, WILL NOT and CANNOT in your resolution:
Research shows that when a person sees negative words, they produce stress hormones and transmitters in the body. Psychologically, negative words put you down and we don’t want that when you’re trying to stick to a Resolution. Instead of “I won’t eat bread for the next year”, tell yourself “I will only eat clean foods and avoid processed foods like bread for the next year.” The second sentence sounds way more positive, encouraging, and achievable.
STEP 3: SEE IT AND DO IT
Write down your one-liner resolution on the mirror, on stick notes, and set it on your mobile wallpaper. It’s proven that writing down your objective helps the task get registered better by the brain & every time you see it, it pushes you to take small steps to crack it and not forget it! You can even keep a reminder on your phone. When you visualize or see something on a daily basis, it helps make it happen to reality.
STEP 4: THE 21 DAY ITCH? KILL IT
You must have heard this before – do something for 21 days in a row and will become a habit, and this is true. Once you follow your Resolution for 21 days straight, your body and mind will see this as a habit, which will make it so much easier, as if its just part of your routine!
STEP 5: START TODAY. YOU ARE NOT A TREE!
Why wait for January 1st when you can start today?! Do you want to make your Resolution a habit? And you want to make sure you follow it for the next year right? Start today! Create a habit before January ends! You’ll already be halfway there!
STEP 6: MAINTAIN A LOG OF SUCCESSES & FAILURES
There are going to be days or weeks where you’ll do supremely well and days where you’re going to feel sluggish. That’s all right; it’s part of our nature. To keep yourself motivated, maintain a log or journal to see your progress. When you can see how well you’re doing, chances are you’re going to want to continue the winning streak.
STEP 7: YOU ARE AWESOME. REWARD YOURSELF!
This is an extremely crucial step. Always reward yourself. Sticking by something can be really tough, especially if you’re trying to avoid something you love, like chocolates or pizza. STEP 8: REVIEW YOUR RESOLUTION
It’s always important to check in on your progress. Set a check-in time for yourself to see how you’re fairing. This could be once in 3 months, once in 4 months, or even once a month. Review your logbook or your habit tracker to see your progress. It is best to keep a quarterly check, as the duration is not too long or short. If you check in every week, it could be frustrating to see the week that you were feeling sluggish. If you check in once in 6 months, you could simply forget to check your logbook all together. STEP 9: ASK YOUR BFF TO CHALLENGE YOU
