Skin rashes can be unsightly and irritating. The urge to itch can grip you at any time and even in a public place. Rashes turn your skin red, swollen and blotchy and itching scars might last long after the rash has subsided.

If you’re often plagued by skin rashes, fret not, for there are ways to lower your chances of developing them. Read on to learn how to get relief from skin rashes and enjoy healthy and clear skin.

So how do you know you’re suffering from a rash and not another kind of skin disease? Look out for symptoms like itchy skin that’s also flaky or dry, reddish or pinkish skin or skin that is inflamed. You might also experience a burning sensation in the area where the rash has appeared.

Skin rash causes

These are some of the most common causes of skin rashes:

Allergies: Rashes often develop as allergic reactions to other substances. Certain cosmetic products or items of jewelry could trigger rashes because of skin irritants present in them. Similarly, medicines like antibiotics or aspirin-based drugs can cause allergic reactions. Food-related allergies like nut, soy or shellfish allergies can also cause rashes.

Insect bites: You may be an animal lover, but it’s probably best to stay away from poisonous insects. When such insects bite you, they deposit venom into your skin. Your body produces antibodies to destroy the venom and rashes develop as a side effect. Insect bites might appear as welts, tiny blisters or hives.

Poisonous plants: If  you’re creating a green patch indoors, see to it that you choose non-poisonous plants to share your space with you. Plants like Marigolds and Orchids can cause skin reactions in those with sensitive skin. Worse still are plants like Poison Ivy, Poison Oak, Wood Nettle and Stinging Nettle that are sure to trigger skin rashes in anyone who touches them.

Bacterial infections: Certain bacterial infections can cause red, bump-like rashes that slowly increase in size. The rash begins to form when a wound is not sterilized or if a person has weak immunity.

Heat Rashes: Heat rashes affect you when the flow of sweat is obstructed. These are most likely to pop up in hot and humid months. They are induced by friction, sweating, and wearing sweaty clothes for long periods of time.

Treatment for skin rashes

You should visit a dermatologist (skin specialist) to get your skin rash diagnosed. Treatment is suggested depending on the nature and cause of the rash. Treatments for skin rashes usually include topical creams, lotions and oral medication.

Home remedies for skin rashes

Certain tried and tested home remedies can be effective treatments for skin rashes. At the very least, they will provide relief till you see a skin specialist.

Aloe Vera

Fresh Aloe Vera has natural anti-inflammatory, antiviral and antioxidative properties. Slice an Aloe Vera leaf in half and scoop out the chunks of gel. Blend the chunks in a mixer to get a smooth paste. Apply the paste on the affected area at regular intervals till the rash subsides.

Cold compress

A cold-water bath, compression with a cloth dipped in cold water, or an ice pack can soothe inflammation caused by skin rashes.

Oatmeal bath

Oatmeal has anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties. To prepare an “oatmeal bath”, powder one cup of oatmeal and dissolve it in your bathwater. After you finish your oatmeal bath, make sure to pat yourself dry and apply a skin-safe moisturiser. The oatmeal itself also locks in moisture, helping your skin stay hydrated.

Baking Soda

Baking soda has anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties, making it effective for treating skin rashes. To use it, mix one tablespoon of baking soda with the same amount of water. Apply the mixture to the affected area and leave it on for 10 minutes before rinsing it off. You can also make the same paste with coconut oil instead of water. Apply twice a day till the rash subsides

Skin supplements

Another great way to protect your skin from rashes and skin diseases is by boosting your overall skin health. You can do this by eating and drinking foods that are good for the skin. Alternatively, you can consume skin supplements. Setu Skin: Renew is powered with Glutathione, a powerful antioxidant that detoxifies the liver, improves skin elasticity, protects skin from damage and strengthens overall skin health.
