‘No Poo’ the new buzz word is taking the internet by storm. It has almost formed its own cult. Thousands of people around the world are swearing by this new and, supposedly, more beneficial method of hair wash. You may have come across a few stories about how people are having a good hair day every day with the no poo method, but the question is does it really work? Is it really that beneficial? Can we try it? We have done a little digging and found out everything we could about this new millennial trend. Here’s everything we know, hope it answers your question. Read on!

 

What Is The Deal With Noo Poo?

In the broadest sense, no poo means no shampoo. This method basically preaches washing your hair without using commercial shampoos. People around the world have been attracted to this method for various reasons.  

Some are just done with drenching their hair in chemicals unnecessarily, some want to avoid stripping their hair of all the natural oils, and some want to save the earth by reducing the number of plastic bottles. Everybody has their own valid reasons to go ‘no poo’! 

Giving up shampoo does not necessarily mean you have to give up washing your hair altogether. Don’t worry, your hair won’t stink or become unhealthy and unmanageable if you try this method.

Baking Soda Clubbed With Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

This method of hair wash is best suited for those with dry hair or a scalp full of dandruff. Baking soda will cleanse your hair while ACV helps soften them. For this method, you will need to make a paste of 1 part baking soda and 3 parts lukewarm water. Apply the paste on your hair and scalp generously and let it set for a few minutes. Now rinse your hair with diluted ACV, and enjoy your good hair day!

Pros: ACV has several hair benefits. It is antifungal, which means no more dandruff. Can balance the scalp’s Ph and even promotes natural shine in the hair. Above all, the ingredients needed for this method are super cheap and easily available [1].     

Cons: Well, everything comes with a downside. With the many benefits that this no poo method has, there is, however, one small drawback too. Some people may experience irritation on the scalp with this combination. If not done right, the combo can be a little too harsh on the scalp and hair.

Coconut oil

Coconut oil has several hair benefits, and we all know it. However, in the no poo method, it can be especially beneficial for those with dry, coarse, or damaged hair. All this while you’ve been using coconut oil to nourish your hair, but now use it to clean them. Apply it on your hair a few minutes before taking a shower and then rinse it with water while showering. 

Pros: Coconut oil is budget-friendly and is easily available everywhere. It not only moisturizes and nourishes your hair, but it also has anti-microbial properties that’ll help you keep dandruff at bay.

Cons: Coconut oil is extremely greasy and can be tough to rinse out. While rinsing, your bathroom floor may also turn slippery, so be careful! 

Give Your Hair And Skin The TLC That It Deserves

Conditioner Only

Using conditioner only is ideal for those with coarse curls (extremely curly hair), dry textured hair, or hair that’s been chemically treated. In this method, you simply replace your regular shampoo with your regular conditioner. However, make sure that you rinse your hair thoroughly. 

Pros: Conditioners are generally gentler and may not cause as much damage as shampoo. Your hair may feel cleaner and softer.

Cons: You are still spending a lot of money and exposing your hair and scalp to harsh chemicals. 

Water Only 

This method is best suited for everyone, however, if your hair is already too dry, you might want to look up for other options. Wash your hair with lukewarm water, make sure that the water is not too hot, as hot water can dry out your hair and skin. Take a wide-tooth comb and gently brush your hair. This is an essential step as you are relying on the natural oils produced by your scalp for the nourishment.  Therefore, you need to brush those oils from the roots to disperse towards the tips. 

Pros: The Water only method is the cheapest and, perhaps, the safest method of them all. There are no chemicals involved in this method.

Cons: If you have medium to long hair, they might be dry and brittle towards the tips, especially at the beginning of following this method. Your hair may not feel as clean or may not look as you want them to.  Brushing wet hair can cause breakage, you may lose more hair than usual.

Can I Try No Poo?

Experimenting with the no poo method has a relatively lower number of risks. It can be tried by almost everyone. However, if you have a history of skin or scalp issues you must seek professional advice before attempting it. Those with fine or thin hair may face more difficulties as your hair will get oily faster if you skip the shampoo. 

Before giving up shampooing all of a sudden, you can try slowly stretching the time between washes for a few weeks, or even months if you may.

Having said that it is advised that you avoid the no poo method if you have dry or brittle hair, have chemically treated or colour your hair, if you regularly use heat to style them or have a very sensitive skin [2]
