The eyes are undeniably one of the most important organs in our body. They help us see and make sense of the world around us. Many of us are naturally blessed with 20/20 vision whereas some of us rely on corrective glasses or contact lenses to see better. With time, however, even for those of us with perfect vision, vision problems may occur and certain conditions such as age-related macular degeneration may develop .
It is important to care for our eye health to maintain good vision. Making certain changes in your lifestyle and adopting healthy habits can preserve and improve your vision in the long run. Here are some of the things you can practice to care for your eyes and your vision:
1. Eat A Healthy Diet
The food we eat has a huge impact on our body and the way it functions. The same goes for our eyes. To maintain good eye health, a nutritious diet is of paramount importance. As children, we were always told to eat lots of carrots to have good vision. There is a lot of truth to this as carrots contain beta-carotene and Vitamin A, which are good for the eyes. Vegetables that have high amounts of beta-carotene are:
- Sweet potatoes
Green vegetables are also essential for healthy eye health as they protect the eyes from certain conditions. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are carotenoids found in the eyes which protect the eyes from conditions such as macular degeneration which is caused by excessive exposure to UV rays. Green vegetables contain high amounts of Lutein and Zeaxanthin and can help the eyes maintain better health and ward off diseases. Some good sources of Lutein and Zeaxanthin are:
- Collard greens
- Brussel Sprouts
Omega-3 is another important nutrient that is vital for good eye health. Omega-3 fatty acids protect the eyes from degenerative diseases. They help in lubricating the meibomian glands which are small glands on the edge of the eyelid. This helps prevent and improve conditions such as dry eyes. Some rich sources of Omega-3 are:
- Chia seeds
- Canola oil
2. Wear Sunglasses
As discussed, UV rays can negatively impact eye health and damage the eyes. Precautions should be taken to avoid looking directly at the sun and one should have the habit of wearing protective gear such as sunglasses when out in the sun. Sun exposure can damage the eyes and cause cataracts and macular degeneration. Investing in a pair of good sunglasses that can block out UV-A and UV-B radiation can go a long way.
3. Give Your Eyes Rest
To avoid straining your eyes, you can make it a point to give your eyes a rest whenever you engage in eye-exerting activities such as using a computer screen, reading, watching television, etc. you can follow the 20-20-20 rule. To do this, after 20 minutes of exerting your eyes, look at something 20 feet away for a period of 20 seconds.
4. Get Regular Exercise
Getting regular exercise and staying fit can contribute to good eye health. Certain chronic conditions such as diabetes develop when one follows a poor lifestyle. Diabetes leads to Diabetic Retinopathy in which the vision gradually worsens. So, it’s important to keep your fitness and blood sugar levels in check. Various forms of exercise such as cardio, running, yoga, weightlifting can be practiced for 20 minutes daily to keep your body in peak condition.
5. Wear Protective Eyewear
While performing any activity which can pose a risk to the eyes, protective eyewear should be worn. This includes activities such as construction work, playing sports, handling chemicals, etc. Foreign objects and chemicals in the eyes can cause irreversible damage to the eyes. In addition to this, one can wear anti-glare glasses while using computer screens to reduce straining of the eyes.
In today’s technologically advanced era, it is important to take care of our eyes more than ever. Many of us spend hours upon hours with our eyes fixed on a screen. While we do this while working our jobs, we also spend an excessive amount of our leisure time with our eyes glued to our smartphones.
Besides this, pollution and increasing UV rays from the sun also pose a threat to our eye health. Taking care of our eyes should be a top priority. You can practice these tips to care for your eyes. In addition to this, you should visit your doctor for regular eye check-ups at least once a year to check for conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, etc.
